Mount Karisimbi Volcano Hike Mount Karisimbi is the highest of the volcanoes found within the Virunga ranges of mountains. It is the eleventh highest in Africa. This inactive volcano is found in the Volcanoes National Park and along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rising up to 4,507 meters, Mount is surrounded by other neighboring volcanoes like Mikeno, Nyiragongo and Bisoke. The mountain gets its name Karisimbi (Kinyarwanda for “White Shell”) from the snow that usually covers the top during the dry season. Karisimbi has a caldera Branca and two craters in the summit with the largest being Mutango

Mount Karisimbi volcano is located within the Volcanoes National Park offering amazing hiking adventures in Rwanda to all travelers that visit the country on holiday.
This hike takes you towards the summit of Mount Karisimbi Volcano and en-route you watch the great terrain, volcanic formation, dense forest and vegetation, steep slopes and muddy trails on rainy days.
This Hike can be organized by an authentic Tour Operator Agency who help you book these on your behalf, arrange tents, meals as the itinerary says. Porters are available for hire at a cost of about US $20 to help you carry cameras, tents and other hiking equipment as you ascend to the top.
Mountain Karisimbi Hiking Process
Hiking to the top of this Mountain Volcano takes a period of 2 Days. You transfer to the headquarters for registration, briefing then later you transfer to the starting point situated at the base of Mount Bisoke Volcano. Here you are distributed into groups with a park ranger then embark on hike for 7 hours then briefly stop mid-way at an altitude of 3,700 meters for the night.
Here a camp is set up for dinner then rest in preparation for the final climb the next Day. After going through the cold night and having delicious breakfast embark on a challenging 1 hour hike to the summit along steep slopes, stronger winds and fog.
When you reach the summit, the scenery is beautiful watching other Mountain Volcanoes at a distance i.e Mount Muhabura volcano, Nyamulagira volcano and Nyiragongo. After enjoying the stunning views, embark on a 6 hour descent to the starting point then to the park office where you leave from to hotel/ lodge.
Best time to Hike Mount Karisimbi Volcano
Mount Karisimbi can be visited anytime around the year although the Best time to hike the Mountain Volcano is during the drier periods between December to March and June to early October.
What to Pack for your Mount Karisimbi Hike
- Good hiking shoes, a sweater/warm clothing, a waterproof heavy jacket, a hat and walking stick
- A tent for camping. This can be hired or provided by an authentic tour operator agency.
- A sleeping bag
- Packed food for the overnight stay.
- Porters to help carry your backpack, tents, cameras and other equipment.
